Rickey Henderson, baseball’s greatest leadoff hitter and the all-time stolen base king, died Friday in Oakland at the age of 65 after battling pneumonia, multiple sources confirmed on Saturday.

Henderson’s career was a testament to speed, power and charisma.

Over 24 seasons, he racked up a record-breaking 1,406 stolen bases, 2,295 runs scored, and 81 leadoff home runs. A 10-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, and 1990 American League MVP, Henderson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 2009.

“My favorite hero was Muhammad Ali,” Henderson said during his induction speech in Cooperstown, New York. “He said one time, quote, I am the greatest, end of quote. That was something I always wanted to be, and now that the [Baseball Writers’ Association of America] has voted me into the Baseball Hall of Fame, my journey as a player is complete. I am now in the class of the greatest players of all time, and at this moment, I am very, very humbled.”

The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in California also inducted Henderson in 2020. READ MORE…

Rwanda stepped up its bid to host a Formula 1 race by welcoming the global racing community for the FIA Annual General Assembly, a gathering of the sport’s top decision makers.

The event, held from Dec.10-13, brought together officials, drivers and sponsors in the capital, Kigali. It was the first time it had been staged in Africa.

President Paul Kagame, while opening the event, officially confirmed Rwanda’s bid to host the first Formula 1 race in Africa since 1993, saying the country was making “good progress” in its discussions with Formula 1.

Four-time Formula 1 Champion Max Verstappen was among those in Kigali, and will undertake community service in the city. A spot on the Formula 1 race calendar would be a major boost to the country’s plan to use sports to drive tourism. The country will host the cycling world road championships next year and already has partnerships with the NBA’s Basketball Africa League and top-flight European football clubs Arsenal and Paris St. Germain.

Rwanda is pushing ahead with its bid to be added to the lucrative Formula 1 race calendar as part of a wider plan to double down on sports events as a central plank of its economic growth plan.

Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe told Semafor Africa Rwanda is still in talks with Formula 1 concerning its bid to host the sport’s first race in Africa since 1993. He said Rwandan authorities were working with other countries that already host races to learn from their experiences. He said “We’re interested — it would be a good thing for the sport itself and Rwanda.”

Nduhungirehe said multimillion-dollar investments in facilities, partnerships with sports federations like NBA’s Basketball Africa League, and sponsorship deals with top European football teams including England’s Arsenal and France’s Paris St Germain were driving tourism.

The minister said hosting sporting events helped to drive tourism revenue, which stood at $636 million in 2023 — a 36% increase on the previous year.

Rwanda’s critics accuse it of “sportswashing.” →

New Research Reveals Racial Preference For White Coaches In College Football https://blackstarnews.com/new-research-reveals-racial-preference-for-white-coaches-in-college-football/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 18:45:23 +0000 https://blackstarnews.com/?p=84028 The post New Research Reveals Racial Preference For White Coaches In College Football appeared first on Black Star News.

A new paper from the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) shows that there is a distinct hiring preference for white coaches at Division I college football programs. White men are overrepresented in the head coaching ranks relative to their presence as student-athletes, and this overrepresentation has persisted for at least the past 10 years.

The paper, by Algernon Austin, the Director of Race and Economic Justice at CEPR, uses a representation ratio to assess college football coaching positions – in this case the proportion of people of a particular race who are head coaches divided by the proportion of student-athletes of the same race. Since the vast majority of coaches are former players, a representation ratio uses the racial composition of former players to evaluate the racial composition of coaches.

Roughly half of those playing football at this elite level are Black, but Black coaches account for only about 20 percent of head coaching positions. White players, meanwhile, make up a smaller share of the student-athlete population, but the vast majority of Division I head football coaches are white. In terms of the representation ratio, Black football head coaches had a representation ratio of 0.35 in 2024 – or about one-third of what one might expect. Meanwhile, the white representation ratio was 1.77, or almost twice what one might expect.

The paper also looks at the ratios in other major sports. Black men are proportionally represented in the head coaching ranks in baseball and outdoor track, and are underrepresented in basketball and soccer. White men are proportionally represented in baseball and outdoor track, and overrepresented in soccer and basketball – the latter being the most extreme overrepresentation of the five sports that were studied. The white male representation ratio in basketball is more than twice what one might expect.

“These findings point to a real crisis of economic opportunity for Black football student-athletes who want to join the head coaching ranks in the sport that they play,” said CEPR’s Director of Race and Economic Justice Algernon Austin. “If Black athletes doubt that they would ever be able to attain such a position, they are less likely to even pursue it. In that sense, underrepresentation helps to maintain underrepresentation.”

The paper argues that an effective affirmative action program based on recruiting, mentoring, and providing equal opportunity to Black former football student-athletes would create more career opportunities for Black athletes seeking to coach at the elite level.

The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) is an independent, nonpartisan think tank that was established to promote democratic debate on the most important economic and social issues that affect people’s lives.

The upcoming fifth season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) will feature an expanded footprint, with games played in Morocco for the first time.

The opening game is slated for the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat on April 5 next year.

The league finals will also be hosted in South Africa for the first time, on June 14, in Pretoria’s SunBet Arena. The 2025 BAL season will feature 12 club sides from 12 African countries playing 48 games.

The expansion comes as the league looks to grow attendance numbers, fan engagement, and commercial revenues in a challenging macroeconomic environment. Last season BAL games were broadcast to more than 200 countries over free-to-air and paid TV partners, including Canal+, NBA TV, SuperSport, and TV5 Monde. It expects to announce a similar roster of partners early next year.

Check yourself! Anger and disappointment are likely to arise as you read this essay. The important and relevant question is: “What do you do with the anger and disappointment?”

We kickstart this essay with a reconsideration of a January 2019 BlackEconomics.org Commentary entitled, “No Longer a Credible Threat.” It is less than one and one-half pages long. Please read it!

Also, please consider the preface of a 2011 BlackEconomics.org monograph, 53. The preface states in part:

At the beginning of football or basketball season, ask any young Afrodescendant
boy who loves sports concerning who is going to win the NFL or NBA
championships and you can be assured that he has a vision. He will not only tell
you which teams he expects to win the championships, but he will also tell you the
reasons why his expected outcome may not materialize.

We can expand the latter statement to refer to young Black American (Afrodescendant) girls and to include references to women’s professional football leagues and to the WNBA.

The point is that our youth know a tremendous amount about sports. Realize that to enable their “forecasts” of game and championship winners, they have insights about teams and players that are, and are not, credible threats (offensively and defensively).

Believe it or not, much of the foregoing is at the heart of “the Black American problem!”

We are in the heart of the college and professional football seasons, and at the outset of college and professional basketball seasons. The following is what we know without slinging a multitude of statistics at you. Black American athletes are the life blood, and at the core, of these sports. In one sense, this could be a very favorable outcome. On the other hand, the situation is unfavorable because we are not the major material beneficiaries of these sports entertainment activities. Total
2022 revenue for Division I colleges’ and universities’ athletic programs (mainly from football and basketball) was about $17.5 billion.[i] Total 2023 revenue for the NFL and the NBA was about $30 billion.[ii] Although an answer is not readily available, we should ask: Which portion of these revenue amounts were squeezed out as compensation for Black American athletes?

The relative size of the ratios that serve as answers to the latter question is the tip of the Black American iceberg-sized problem. But the analysis must go further. We must enquire: Which portion of the revenue earned by firms and individuals who leach from the college and professional football and basketball operations end up in the pockets of Black Americans? Here, we are referring to: Construction firms that build and maintain sports facilities; manufacturing firms that produce sporting equipment, uniforms, wearables, and other paraphernalia; firms that provide electric and water utilities for sports venues; telecommunications services for sporting events (producers and consumers); service firms that provide food, custodial, and waste management services for sport venues; wholesale and retail sales firms that provide sports wearables; marketing firms that manage ticket sales; media production firms and individuals, including sports programs, commentators, writers (inside and outside of well-known networks), and producers of advertisement; legal, financial, artistic, and non-sports entertainment, consulting, and other service firms that assists firms and individuals in sports entertainment; agricultural, manufacturing, and retail firms that provide food and beverages for consumption at home in connection with the consumption of sports entertainment; hotel and accommodation services for those engaged in football and basketball sporting events; air and road transportation service firms that provide services to athletes and fans; escort services; childcare service providers who enable parents to “take the night off” and attend sporting events; and etc.? Certainly, this list is not exhaustive.

According to the latest US Government industry statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the Arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation, and food services (AERAFS) industry group accounted in 2023 for $2.4 trillion of total economic output for the nation of $48.4 trillion.[iii] It is important to note that only seven of the 15 industry groups in these statistics reflected a higher level of output than the AERAFS industry group. Although Sports entertainment is just one facet of the just mentioned industry group, Sports entertainment must be viewed as accounting for a significant portion of the industry group’s output. Again, which portion of this $2.4 trillion pie finds its way into Black Americans’ hands? Reversing the question and posing an even more important question: How much of the $2.4 trillion in revenue escaped from Black Americans’ pockets and into the accounts of AERAFS industry group operators.

Also, a check of the latest US Government statistics on how the nation’s residents expend our time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that Americans expended 21.5% of an average day (5.15 hours) on Leisure and sports activities during 2023.[iv] For Black Americans, it was 23.0% of an average day (5.51 hours). In other words, Black Americans expended about 7.0% more time on Leisure and sports activities than other Americans.

Given the foregoing information, the questions begging to be asked are: Are we spending too much time on, and not reaping enough of the material benefits (revenue/receipts) from, Leisure and sports activities; especially for a People who are at the heart of these activities, yet at the bottom of the socioeconomic hierarchy. Are our assertions that “we desire to rise” consistent with these outcomes?

Do we recognize that, for 2021, only 9% of Black Americans were employed in so-called Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) occupations compared with 64% of White workers? That is, less than 10% of Black American workers can live life free of the near immediate threat of obsolescence. What happens to the mind and body of a person who is incessantly under a subconscious threat that their very livelihood can vaporize before their very eyes? Would it not
be wise to redirect a considerable portion of our energy and efforts from becoming proficient in sports entertainment to becoming STEM professionals or proficient in other occupations that are expected to have much longer time horizon to obsolescence?

The foregoing paints a vivid picture of Black Americans largely engaged in activities that are “time fillers” with little significant usefulness other than to create economic opportunities mainly for others. Also, Black Americans in non-STEM occupations are not likely to have significant roles in important future production opportunities. Accordingly, Black Americans’ most important future economic role is likely to be as consumers and producers of goods and services that enrich
others—with little prospect of ever reducing further the income and wealth gaps. Given such trivial and unimportant roles, we should recognize that we are not a credible threat, and that every effort will be made to keep us corralled in this position/condition so that we never become a credible threat.

As long as we remain a non-credible threat, we can expect to experience outcomes similar to those that materialized for the November 5, 2024 US National Election. We will be viewed as an expendable People allowed to exist only if we do not upset the apple cart. This is the reality that Black America confronts. We do not urge dramatic, drastic, or radical efforts to transform our condition in lightening quick fashion. Rather, we urge systematic and persistent efforts to halt and then reverse our condition, which is akin to that of the mythological frog that remains in a pot of water with a temperature rising toward the boiling point. If we do not find our
way out of this pot, then our outcome is assured. As always, we not only seek to identify problems, issues, and concerns, but to offer potential solutions/responses. In this case, we simply point to the Long-Terms Strategic Plan for Black America (https://www.ltspfba.org/LTSP/fin_ltspfba_071223.pdf, 1.5 MB).

It’s been 50 years since “Rumble in the Jungle” put the country on the world stage under the dictator Mobutu Sese Seko but there was not a major official commemoration. However, local artists have taken it upon themselves to do so. “From a political perspective, celebrating ‘Zaire 74’ is awkward because it would mean celebrating the peak of Mobutu’s era,” Patrick Mudekereza, director of the Waza Art Center in Lubumbashi, told Semafor Africa.

Across Goma, Kinshasa, and Lubumbashi, galleries and art centers are preserving this bit of history. In Kinshasa, the Malabo Gallery showcases Patrick Lomalisa’s works in an exhibition titled “Beyond the Ring” (pictured). Inspired by Rumble in the Jungle, Lomalisa’s 20 paintings capture the spirit of the legendary fight while drawing “a connection to the daily struggles that everyone faces,” said Joseph Darchy Mayunga, of Malobo Gallery.

In Lubumbashi, the country’s second-largest city, photographer Sikasso Kazadi is showcasing archival photos over a month, from Ali’s arrival to the excitement in Kinshasa and the fight with Foreman, with free public access. Other artists, like Colin Delfosse from Belgium and Kakudji, are also drawing on this history to “keep it alive.”

“This is our identity, and these exhibits keep the flame alive for current and future generations,” says Yvon Edoumou, a local art critic.

A record-equaling 17 players from African countries featured on NBA rosters for the opening night of the 2024/25 season this week, even as the league eyes greater popularity in Africa and more talent from the continent.

Data analyzed by Semafor Africa shows that the number of players from African countries in the league has grown at pace over the past decade, from just six in 2014.

The growth of the NBA’s African contingent is starting to benefit from its ramped up activities on the continent, particularly its talent development programs. Cameroon’s Ulrich Chomche, the first-ever prospect directly selected from the NBA Academy Africa in Senegal to the NBA, was the youngest player to be picked in this year’s NBA Draft at age 18. He scored for the Toronto Raptors against the Cleveland Cavaliers in his NBA debut on Wednesday.

Cameroon boasts the most players from the continent in the league, with five. Among them is the 22/23 league MVP and Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, who was born in Yaoundé, but represents the United States internationally. Others include the New Orleans Pelicans’ 20-year-old center Yves Missi (pictured), who made a strong NBA debut against the Chicago Bulls on Thursday — scoring 12 points, 7 rebounds and one assist.

Nigeria had four players on opening night rosters, including Precious Achiuwa for the New York Knicks, Josh Okogie for the Phoenix Sun, Adem Bona for the 76ers, and Charles Bassey for the San Antonio Spurs. Other African countries represented on the rosters include the DR Congo, Angola, South Sudan and Sudan.

DeAndre Hopkins Fantasy Outlook After Being Traded to Kansas City Chiefs https://blackstarnews.com/deandre-hopkins-fantasy-outlook/ Thu, 24 Oct 2024 06:51:07 +0000 https://blackstarnews.com/?p=76510 The post DeAndre Hopkins Fantasy Outlook After Being Traded to Kansas City Chiefs appeared first on Black Star News.

]]>
The DeAndre Hopkins trade from the Tennessee Titans to the Kansas City Chiefs is a big shake-up in the world of fantasy football. Drafted as the third wide receiver in only two weeks (after Davante Adams and Amari Cooper), Hopkins fantasy owners can only hope. It has been a rough season so far but perhaps this will be the jump start that is needed.

DeAndre Hopkins Fantasy Outlook After Being Traded to Chiefs

This year has presented a less than ideal scenario for Hopkins in terms of fantasy performance. There have been more weeks where he has recorded less than two fantasy points than weeks with double-digit points. This primarily can be attributed to the Tennessee Titans’ passing offense, which has proven to be the worst in the league in terms of points per game.

Those who have been rostering Hopkins this season have undoubtedly experienced frustration. His statistics through seven weeks have placed him in a borderline droppable category. However, with his recent move to Kansas City, Hopkins now has an opportunity to start anew.

Also read : New York Liberty Win First WNBA Championship In Franchise History

The Struggles in Tennessee

Hopkins’ performance in Tennessee has been far from outstanding. Entering Week 8, he ranked as the WR78 in PPR formats, largely due to a lackluster Titans offense that has struggled significantly. With only one standout game, where he scored 19.3 points, his overall average has dropped to a mere 3.9 points per game.

23.3 fantasy points over seven games, with a total of 83 receiving yards on seven catches and no scores in his last three matches.

This dismal performance made him almost replaceable in many leagues.

A Fresh Start in Kansas City

The trade to Kansas City presents a golden opportunity for Hopkins to refresh his career. The Chiefs have been plagued with injuries to wide receivers, Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice, so that would fill an immediate need for a solid target for QB Patrick Mahomes.

Analysts believe that if Hopkins can quickly adapt to the Chiefs’ offensive scheme, he could emerge as one of Mahomes’ primary options, significantly increasing his target share.

Adjusting Fantasy Expectations

While it’s tempting to expect a return to Hopkins’ prime form, it’s crucial to annoy those expectations. Not to mention the fact that he is 32 years old and just coming off a knee injury, he is not likely (no matter how good he is) to repeat his performance from earlier seasons when he averaged just over 1,300 yards and nearly 10 TDs a season.

But with the Chiefs receiving group as depleted as it is, he could come in and be a WR3 or more by the time this season has played out.

Impact on Other Players

The ripple effects throughout the chief’s offense that will come with the acquisition of Hopkins. While he steps into a leading role, it may also enhance the overall performance of other players like Travis Kelce and rookie Xavier Worthy. Kelce is still the center of the offense but with Hopkins drawing more attention, he could see more openings as defenses shift to cover him.

On the other hand, guys like Worthy will have fewer opportunities with Hopkins demanding more balls.

Matchup Against the Raiders

Looking ahead to his first game with Kansas City against the Las Vegas Raiders, factors are working in Hopkins’ favor. The Raiders have given up big yards and touchdowns to wide receivers this year, and that should set up perfectly for Hopkins to make an immediate impact.

But fantasy managers should be wary, even though this matchup looks good on paper, if there isn’t immediate chemistry with Mahomes it could spell disaster.

Long-Term Outlook

As fantasy managers look ahead, it is obvious that Hopkins may not immediately reclaim his elite status, but it is still an improvement from his former circumstances. If he can manage at least 600-750 yards and six or more touchdowns by season’s end, he could become a valuable asset once again.

For whoever has him on their roster or can find him on waivers, this is a good time to bring him back to your starting lineup.

Conclusion

To sum it all up, the DeAndre Hopkins trade to the Kansas City Chiefs is a double-edged sword. Although he may no longer be the dominant force he once was, a change in scenery could mean better numbers for fantasy. For fantasy football enthusiasts, keeping an eye on his performance over the next few weeks will be crucial in determining his value as we head deeper into the season.
