December 27, 2024 — Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Friday released its 2024 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (AHAR) Part 1 to Congress, revealing an 18.1 percent increase in homelessness across the nation. The report, compiled from data gathered at a point in time in January 2024, underscores the growing urgency of the homelessness crisis, driven by a combination of longstanding affordable housing shortages, rising inflation, discrimination, and insufficient social safety nets to address the rising demand for support. Marginalized people, including people of color, continue to be over-represented in the data released today.

The biggest driver of the crisis is the widespread lack of affordable housing. In 2024, median rent was 18 percent higher than it was in 2020, and the National Low Income Housing Coalition estimates there is a shortage of 7.3 million units of affordable and available rental homes in the country.

One of the most harrowing data points from the report is that family homelessness rose by 39.4 percent. This is unacceptable and continues to demonstrate that the needs of the most vulnerable are not being met. This crisis drives people into homelessness every day in America and makes the work to rehouse them far more difficult.

While the data presents a challenging outlook, it demonstrates that success is possible when the federal government prioritizes evidence-based solutions and funds these resources to scale.

“The answer to ending homelessness is ensuring everyone has access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. Our leaders must immediately expand the resources to rehouse people without homes and assist the rapidly growing number of people who cannot afford skyrocketing rents,” said Ann Oliva, CEO of the National Alliance to End Homelessness. “This record-setting increase in homelessness should sound the alarm for federal, state, and local lawmakers to advance evidence-based solutions to this crisis.”

One notable example is the reduction in veteran homelessness. From January 2023 to January 2024, veteran homelessness dropped by 7.6 percent, with unsheltered veteran homelessness seeing a 10.7 percent decrease. This marks the continuation of a successful federal strategy that has reduced veteran homelessness by more than 55 percent since 2010, making it one of the most significant achievements in the fight to end homelessness in America.

The success in reducing veteran homelessness is proof further investments must be made to have enough resources to help all populations.

“The reduction in veteran homelessness offers us a clear roadmap for addressing homelessness on a larger scale,” said Oliva. “With bipartisan support, adequate funding, and smart policy solutions, we can replicate this success and reduce homelessness nationwide. Federal investments are critical in tackling the country’s housing affordability crisis and ensuring that every American has access to safe, stable housing.”

Federal intervention is needed to ensure that this crisis does not worsen. Key findings from the HUD 2024 AHAR report reveal several systemic challenges that may impact rising homelessness.

  • Housing Affordability: The country continues to face a severe shortage of affordable housing, exacerbated by inadequate federal intervention. Without comprehensive systems to prevent homelessness and transition individuals into permanent housing, many Americans remain trapped in the cycle of homelessness.
  • Insufficient Social Safety Nets: Federal programs like the Housing Choice Voucher program (also known as Section 8) are underfunded, currently able to assist only one in four eligible households. As pandemic-era rental assistance programs expire, many households are left without critical resources to maintain housing stability.
  • Lack of Preventive Systems: Too few systems are in place to identify people at imminent risk of homelessness and intervene before they become unhoused. The systems that serve people at imminent risk of homelessness, including housing, healthcare, criminal justice, and education, often fail to coordinate and provide timely support to prevent loss of housing.
  • Racial Disparities: Homelessness continues to disproportionately impact people of color and marginalized communities, due to both historic and modern discrimination in housing, employment, wages, healthcare, and economic opportunity.

Despite challenges, these key strategies to combat homelessness are working in several communities that reported reductions:

  • Expanded Shelter and Services: Communities are making strides in expanding shelter capacity, though services remain underfunded and difficult to access for many.
  • Innovative Funding Models: Successful communities are leveraging state and local funds to supplement federal resources and support new approaches to homelessness prevention and housing stability. They are also creatively leveraging Medicaid funds to pay for housing services.
  • Collaborative Efforts: Partnerships with a range of sectors, from landlords to local courts, are proving effective in addressing homelessness at multiple levels. Effective partnerships with Public Housing Authorities are creating particularly strong opportunities to utilize targeted vouchers and rapidly rehouse people.
  • Diversion: Innovative diversion models are helping people at imminent risk of homelessness secure the resources they need to stay housed and avoid ever having to enter homelessness systems in the first place.

HUD’s 2024 AHAR Part 1 report serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued, targeted action. The federal government has an essential role in providing the resources needed to reduce homelessness and address the underlying housing affordability crisis. With sustained investment and collaboration, the country can make significant progress in ensuring that all individuals and families have a place to call home.

The Alliance will continue to release further analysis of the AHAR Part 1 in the coming weeks.

This was the year in which a youth movement exploded onto Kenya’s political scene, forcing significant concessions from the government.

Nationwide protests from June to August were triggered by the government’s introduction of unpopular tax hike proposals in the 2024 Finance Bill, which lays out the government’s fiscal plans for the year. It reflected the challenges faced by African governments trying to balance revenue generation with discontent felt by citizens hit by high inflation.

The demonstrations led by Gen Z and millennial protesters prompted a violent police response and the deaths of 60 people. It also forced the withdrawal of the bill, and the promise of government reforms by President William Ruto. The president completely overhauled his cabinet, incorporating allies of opposition leader Raila Odinga and, more recently, those of his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta.

The protests highlighted the power of social media and technology in political mobilization on the continent. Protesters deployed AI chatbots, TikTok live streams, X Spaces and walkie-talkie apps to share information and rally around key issues.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan – particularly around besieged El Fasher – and a growing refugee crisis on the South Sudan border, have intensified an already alarming humanitarian crisis, according to UN agencies on Friday.

In a new report, the UN human rights office (OHCHR) has detailed the catastrophic humanitarian situation unfolding in El Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state.

The city has been under siege for seven months by fighters from the powerful militia known as the RSF, which has been battling Government forces for control of Sudan since April last year. Thousands of civilians are trapped, leaving at least 782 civilians dead and over 1,143 injured.

The continuing siege of El Fasher and the relentless fighting are devastating lives everyday on a massive scale,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

The report, based on 52 interviews conducted in October and November with survivors who fled El Fasher, reveals a widespread use of explosive weapons in populated areas by the Rapid Support Forces and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) – together with their allied militias.

These actions raise serious concerns about violations of international humanitarian law, including potential war crimes.

Hospitals and camps targeted

The report highlights attacks on key civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The Al-Saudi Maternity Hospital, the last remaining public hospital in El Fasher providing surgical and reproductive health services, has been repeatedly shelled by the RSF.

Tumbasi Medical Centre was similarly targeted in August, resulting in the deaths of 23 people and injuries to 60 more.

The report also documents increased cases of sexual violence since the siege began, exacerbating the suffering of vulnerable populations.

The Zamzam IDP camp, located 15 km south of El Fasher and home to hundreds of thousands of displaced people, has been shelled six times by the RSF, reportedly killing at least 15 civilians.

Attacks against the civilian population and protected persons and objects, including medical facilities, may amount to war crimes,” said Li Fung, the UN High Commissioner’s Representative in Sudan.

Risk of escalation

The situation in El Fasher remains dire, with the report warning of potential large-scale attacks on Zamzam camp and the city itself

Any large-scale attack on Zamzam camp and El Fasher city will catapult civilian suffering to catastrophic levels,” Mr. Türk cautioned.

Rights office, OHCHR, has called on all parties – as well as the international community – to engage in mediation efforts and immediately end hostilities.

WFP workers killed

The World Food Programme (WFP) mourned the deaths of three staff members in the Blue Nile state, killed during an aerial bombardment on 19 December.

WFP Executive DirectorCindy McCain condemned the attack, calling for accountability.

Any loss of life in humanitarian service is unconscionable. Humanitarians are not, and must never be, a target,” Ms. McCain gravely stated.

“2024 is the deadliest year on record for aid workers in Sudan. Yet despite significant threats to their personal safety, they continue to do all they can to provide vital support wherever it is needed,” underscored Secretary-General António Guterres in a statement released by his spokesperson.

Refugee crisis at the border

Meanwhile, the spillover from the war between rival militaries is overwhelming neighbouring South Sudan.

UNHCR warns that over 80,000 people have fled into South Sudan in just three weeks, joining the more than one million Sudanese refugees already there.

The recent surge in arrivals in South Sudan is overwhelming services in border areas, and funding for the humanitarian response remains insufficient,” said Marie-Helene Verney, UNHCR Representative in South Sudan.

Call for accountability

The UN is calling for a renewed push for mediation and increased international support to prevent further civilian suffering.

Ms. Fung expressed the need for accountability and compliance with international law particularly due to “the Jeddah Declaration of Commitments that was signed by both parties in May 2023.”

The OHCHR report also underscores the urgent need for a thorough investigation into potential war crimes and for those responsible to be held accountable.

Emergency funds for Egypt

The Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, has allocated $6 million from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to address the humanitarian needs of refugees fleeing conflict in Sudan to Egypt, in support of the ongoing response there.

The conflict in Sudan has created the world’s fastest-growing displacement crisis, the UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told reporters on Friday.

“Of the more than three million people who have sought protection across Sudan’s borders since April of last year, some 1.2 million are being hosted by Egypt – more than in any other country – according to recent data from the Egyptian Government,” he told reporters at the daily briefing in New York.

One very critical indicator for the United States is Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), and it crashed sharply on December 18, 2024 at 42,326.87 -1,123.03 points, a decline of (-2.58%). This came due to concern for inflation, a shift in Federal Reserve policies, and investor sentiment. Despite broad market weakness, some stocks in DJIA remain top prospects for future growth and stability. Here are detailed stock breakdowns the investors must watch closely.

Market Outlook

The DJIA has been fairly mid-cycle recently:

  • 5-Day Change: -4.13%
  • 1-Month Change: -2.49%
  • 3-Month Change: +1.98%
  • Year-to-Date (YTD): +12.30%
  • 1-Year Change: +14.14%

Its 52-week range indicates that the DJIA traded as low as 37,073.04 and as high as 45,073.63, but investor concerns persist, so those are opportunities in best-of-the-best blue-chip companies.

Best DJIA Stocks to Invest In

1.UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH)

  • Current Price: $499.72
  • Change: +$14.20 (+2.92%)

UnitedHealth fared better in the last market correction. As the health care provider, with a variety of its diversified insurance and health care solution is construed as an investment stock when the times are bad. UnitedHealth’s investment in telemedicine and expansion of Medicare Advantage gets it ready for more optimistic growth.

2. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)

  • Market price: $437.39
  • Change: -$17.07 (-3.76%)

Even with the latest mishaps, Microsoft is still a technological leader. The company remains in the top rank due to its lead in cloud computing through Azure and significant investments in AI. The long-term investor will need to keep tabs on the company’s quarterly cloud revenue and AI product development.

3. Apple Inc. (AAPL)

  • Price: $248.05
  • Change: -$5.43 (-2.14%)

Apple continues to lead with strong demand on iPhones, wearables, and subscription-based services. So, the short-term pressure would be there, but its consistent innovation and strong ecosystem will take this company’s growth into the future. Watch out for product updates, especially in the market of wearable technology, where it’s growing.

4. JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM)

  • Current Price: $230.37
  • Change: -$7.99 (-3.35%)

As the largest U.S. bank, JPMorgan benefits through higher interest rates and the resultant better profit margins. Care should be taken in investor attention to how Federal Reserve policies affect lending revenue. The company has a powerful balance sheet and leads all in investment banking, therefore likely to withstand economic uncertainty.

5. McDonald’s Corp. (MCD)

  • Current Price: $290.88
  • Change: -$5.20 (-1.76%)

McDonald’s is a safe play on downturns in the market. The low-cost menu items, international reach, and online ordering options drive significant top-line sales. Delivery tie-ups and effective pricing enable McDonald’s to be a cash-yielding defensive stock.

6. Visa Inc. (V)

  • Price: $309.78
  • Decline: -$8.52 (-2.68%)

Visa, a digital payment leader, is still riding the wave of cashless transactions globally. Even though the market volatility pulled down the stock price of Visa, its solid transaction volume and global reach are sure to stabilize and grow in the long term.

7. Walt Disney Co. (DIS)

  • Current Price: $111.35
  • Change: -$1.67 (-1.48%)

Rebounding with a vengeance, the company’s rebound is through streaming (Disney+) and a theme park resurgence. The key metrics to watch are subscriber growth for Disney+ as well as box office performance. Disney is still a good long-term buy for entertainment and media investors.

8. Chevron Corp. (CVX)

  • Current Price: $144.08
  • Change: -$4.03 (-2.72%)

Chevron is somewhat breezy on the strength of oil prices gone mad, but such a standing high on the dividend yield remains an attractive one. Chevron remains relevant long-term as well, considering the investment in renewable energy and oil production worldwide. Interested investors need to keep their ears to the ground on energy prices along with the earning of Chevron on its quarterly periods.

9. Boeing Co. (BA)

  • Current Price: $172.62
  • Change: -$0.41 (-0.24%)

Boeing’s turnaround squarely rests on the shoulders of an increase in aircraft deliveries and fly demand. The stock remains volatile, but the company order book boasts revenues into the future well indicated by it. Please track delivery and supply chain headwinds with vigilance.

Conclusion

Recent pullback by DJIA has been another reminder of the cyclicality of the markets. So while short term volatility frightens, for a long time investor, these blue-chip stocks do attract some interest. Defensive Plays : UnitedHealth, Microsoft, Apple, etc are an amalgamation of stability growth and income prospects.

By keeping tabs on fundamentals and key economic indicators, investors can be best-positioned to benefit from what opportunities arise in uncertainty within the market.

The number of Africans who joined the United States armed forces and later became US citizens through military naturalization rose notably between 2020 and 2024, according to new statistics by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The top three African countries of birth for naturalized citizens were Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon. The numbers tripled to 2,200 in the fiscal year 2024, from 700 in 2020.

Over the four-year period, the total number of Nigerian-born military naturalizations was 3,270, Ghanaian-born was 2,190, while Cameroon-born was 1,750.

The total number of US military naturalizations in the period was 52,000. US law offers special provisions for current or veteran members of the military which reduces some of the requirements for the citizenship process.

On Tuesday night, local time, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol (below) abruptly declared martial law. The announcement, broadcast live on television, plunged the nation into shock and disbelief. It rekindled memories of an authoritarian past that remains uncomfortably recent. This marked the first such decree since South Korea transitioned to democracy in 1987. Though brief – the declaration lasted only six hours before Yoon rescinded it following lawmakers’ vote to lift it – this sudden descent into military oversight left an indelible mark on the nation’s collective consciousness.

To much of the global audience, this event came as a shock. For South Koreans, though it was surprising, it felt like an inevitable moment – the culmination of tensions that had been building for a long time. More than 100,000 protesters, joined by over 4,000 professors and 1,466 Catholic priests, have been calling for President Yoon Suk Yeol’s resignation for more than a month. This movement already echoed the massive protests that led to the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye in 2017 for corruption and abuse of power, showcasing South Koreans’ enduring commitment to holding leaders accountable.

News coverage has excelled in capturing the fast-paced chaos of what many are calling the six darkest hours in South Korea this year. Dramatic headlines and live updates have detailed every twist and turn. However, the global audience remains largely unaware of the simmering unrest that led to this breaking point. The deeper story – of widespread domestic dissatisfaction with democracy – has yet to be fully told. With little time for the media to provide this crucial context, it is essential to examine the nationwide protests already underway before Yoon’s shocking declaration of martial law.

Vetoes, Corruption, and Inequality

At the heart of the protests have been allegations of corruption and abuse of power. Yoon has exercised his veto power 25 times since 2023, blocking investigations into allegations against his wife, first lady Kim Keon Hee, including claims of stock manipulation in Deutsch Motors. This is the most frequent use of veto power South Korea has seen since its first president, Syngman Rhee, who faced impeachment in 1952 and eventually resigned in 1960 amid widespread public outrage over his authoritarian rule and attempts to consolidate power.

These vetoes, alongside scandals like the “Myung Tae-Kyun Gate,” have eroded public trust in the administration. The scandal centers around allegations that political broker Myung Tae-Kyun, a close ally of Yoon and his wife Kim, manipulated public opinion during the 2022 presidential election. Through his Future Korea Research Institute, Myung reportedly conducted biased polls favoring Yoon to influence election narratives. A leaked phone recording released by the opposition Democratic Party has further implicated Yoon in discussions about candidate nominations, fueling allegations of election interference. Yoon has denied any wrongdoing.

Beyond these vetoes, Yoon’s administration has faced widespread criticism for systemic failures in governance, public safety, and economic management. The 2022 Itaewon tragedy, in which 159 people lost their lives during a crowd crush, starkly exposed grave inadequacies in public safety protocols and emergency response systems. Lawmakers passed a bill to open a special investigation into this tragedy, but Yoon vetoed it.

Similarly, the death of Marine Corporal Chae Su-geun during military service revealed systemic abuses and negligence within the military. Instead of enabling accountability, Yoon has repeatedly vetoed special prosecutor bills aimed at investigating these military abuses. Public frustration has only grown as investigations into these tragedies have failed to hold senior officials accountable. Meanwhile, Yoon’s administration has also faced allegations of undermining press freedom by targeting journalists and media outlets critical of the government.

Adding to these failures is a healthcare system on the brink of collapse, where prolonged medical staff shortages, exacerbated by budget cuts, have caused long-term disruptions in patient care. Instead of addressing these structural issues, the government has opted for a hasty increase in medical school quotas – a move experts warn will only further destabilize the system.

Yoon’s economic policies have similarly drawn heavy criticism for favoring the wealthy with tax cuts while reducing public welfare budgets, deepening inequality between South Korea’s elites and its struggling middle and working classes. Rising household debt and record-breaking small business closures have fueled calls for reform, yet the administration’s inaction has only alienated the public further. Compounding these grievances, a 15% cut to South Korea’s research and development budget has alarmed academics and scientists, who warn that this decision jeopardizes the nation’s innovation-driven economy and long-term global competitiveness – a concern echoed by prominent universities like Yonsei and Ewha Womans University, which cite these cuts as emblematic of broader governance failures.

A Lesson for the World

South Korea’s overnight struggle has reminded the world of a stark truth: democracy is not self-sustaining. It demands vigilance. It requires collective action.

Martial law has been lifted, but the fight is far from over. On Saturday, South Korea’s National Assembly will vote on the impeachment of President Yoon. If the motion secures a two-thirds majority, the Constitutional Court will decide its fate. With protests still raging and reform demands growing louder, the outcome of this vote will likely shape the nation’s democratic future.

What the world witnessed this week in South Korea highlights the crucial role of institutions and citizens working together to confront governance failures and uphold democratic principles. In an era marked by widespread democratic backsliding and the steady erosion of institutions, South Korea’s fight for justice and transparency stands as a powerful testament to resilience. Safeguarding democracy is a collective responsibility – a lesson that resonates far beyond its borders.

How did the Syrian opposition capture Aleppo so fast? Could we see the end of the Bashar al Assad regime in the coming weeks or months? Who are Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the group leading the anti-Assad offensive, and what are their ties to Al Qaeda or other outside forces?

This week, Mehdi was joined by Syrian-American journalist and analyst Hassan Hassan, in a Zoom Town Hall Q&A with Zeteo’s paid subscribers, to break down the latest developments in Syria and unpack some of the complexities to this major conflict. Hassan is the founder and editor-in-chief of New Lines magazine and author of the New York Times bestseller ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror.

“They [Hayat Tahrir al-Sham] are still obviously bad guys in the sense that they’re radicals, but I don’t think they are… simply jihadists,” says Hassan of HTS. “They’re trying to be pragmatic.”

Given the stark nature of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, it is very easy for outside observers to see the events in Syria through a similar lens of good vs evil, although nuance here is far more important, Hassan explains.

Over the course of more than 40 minutes, the Syrian-American analyst and author took questions from subscribers on everything from Assad’s future, to the make-up of the Syrian opposition, to the role of outside powers like Israel, Russia, Turkey, and the United States. Mehdi also asked Hassan about accusations that HTS are CIA proxies and whether there is a risk of a rise in Sunni-Shia sectarianism across the region.

“The Assad regime was on the verge of normalizing with almost every country in the region,” Hassan tells the Zeteo audience. “I think the heaviest blow is not just that the rebels did this, but the whole trajectory that the Assad regime was basically going for is completely different.”

If you are a paid subscriber, you can watch the full conversation above, including what Hassan means when he says he has hope for Syria and its “three rulers,” and how Donald Trump’s return to power in the US, and all of his appointments from Marco Rubio to Tulsi Gabbard, could play into the situation on the ground.

Black women often carry much of the work of getting out the vote in their communities. They had vigorously supported the historic candidacy of Harris, who would have been the first woman of Black and South Asian descent to win the presidency.

Harris’ loss spurred a wave of Black women across social media resolving to prioritize themselves, before giving so much to a country that over and over has shown its indifference to their concerns.

AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters, found that 6 in 10 Black women said the future of democracy in the United States was the single most important factor for their vote this year, a higher share than for other demographic groups. But now, with Trump set to return to office in two months, some Black women are renewing calls to emphasize rest, focus on mental health and become more selective about what fight they lend their organizing power to.Read more.
