The University of Johannesburg has been ranked as sub-Saharan Africa’s best university, beating two historic rivals — the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand — to the top spot.

The 2024 list by British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) places four South African universities in the top 10, two each from Rwanda and Ghana, and one each from Uganda and Somalia. Nigeria has 41 entries on the list, the most of any country.

Metrics used to compile the ranking included African research citations and co-authorship, accessibility for disabled people, and employability. These are metrics that “matter most to the development of nations south of the Sahara,” said the magazine’s chief global affairs officer, Phil Baty, in a statement.

THE’s ranking was based on a survey of 23,000 students, plus data from schools and Dutch academic analytics company Elsevier, the magazine said. The 129 universities are from 22 African countries, covering less than half of sub-Saharan Africa.

Despite its success, the University of Johannesburg is ranked in the 401-500 band in THE’s global list, where the top 10 are American and British universities.

Governor Wes Moore and Maj. Gen. Janeen L. Birckhead, 31st Adjutant General of Maryland’s Army National Guard, came together this past Veteran’s Day at Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, to posthumously commission Harriet Tubman as a Brigadier General of the Maryland Army National Guard.

Tina Wyatt, Harriet Tubman’s great great great grandniece, accepted the honor on behalf of the family.

Harriet Tubman’s Civil War work is vast. She served as a spy, scout, cook, nurse, and leader. In June 1863, Tubman became the first woman to lead a major military operation in the United States when she guided about 300 Union soldiers through the marshy and mine-filled waters on the Combahee River to fire on Confederate forces, raid, and burn plantations. Tubman raised her voice in song amongst the chaos as crowds of newly freed women, men, and children rushed Union boats, calming the crowds and leading them to evacuation.

WASHINGTON—In response to President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Linda McMahon to lead the Department of Education, AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement:

“While the job of education secretary should not be a consolation prize, we are pleased that Linda McMahon wanted to teach in her early life and that her work on the Connecticut State Board of Education led to her interest in literacy and building career pathways.

“We will try to work with anyone who puts the aspirations of our students, families and communities first. That means strengthening public education, not undermining it. Voters made it clear that’s what they wanted in November’s down-ballot elections.

“We look forward to learning more about Linda McMahon, and if she is confirmed we will reach out to her as we did with Betsy DeVos at the beginning of her tenure. We hope Donald Trump means it when he says he wants a focus on project-based instruction, career and technical education and apprenticeships. This will improve education and job options, making schools more relevant and engaging for young people.

“But we question the future of these popular ideas and more if the Trump administration follows through with plans to close the Department of Education, leaving in doubt a federal-funding lifeline that disproportionately goes to children in need, children with disabilities and young adults who are the first in their families to go to college.

“And college has always been the engine to innovation and opportunity in America, to individual growth and improvement, as well as strengthening communities, which is why we fight so hard for young people to be able to attend without pauperizing student debt, and for educators to have the academic freedom and supports they need for our young people to soar.

“Families with wealth may be able to cover these college and university costs, but not the working-class and middle-class families that we serve every day and have the honor to represent. And speaking of my members, they have always wanted and understood the importance of local schools and local control, not state control. They want the latitude to teach, not test, to meet their students’ needs.

“They are asking, ‘Who’s going to fund services for kids with special needs in Mississippi? What happens to poor kids in South Dakota, Montana and Alaska? How do we ensure there is funding to prepare students for career opportunities? For college?

“‘Will Linda McMahon support us as we teach students to read? Will she protect kids and families, so that everyone in a school feels welcome and can learn?’

“We don’t know the answers to these questions. And while we expect that we will disagree with Linda McMahon on many issues, our devotion to kids requires us to work together on policies that can improve the lives of students, their families, their educators and their communities.”

South Africa’s Wits University is set to unveil its first dedicated artificial intelligence institute this week to help drive the technology’s development across the continent. It comes amid growing concerns that AI may widen the existing digital divide between wealthy countries and poorer nations.

Known as the Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery (MIND) Institute, the program aims to publish impactful research, develop talent, and help to foster innovative applications of AI. Its remit includes informing policy-making on the governance and ethics of AI in Africa.

It is backed by an initial 60 million rand ($3.3 million) investment from Wits, with further funding expected from various technology companies it is in talks with. Wits is also working with other African universities to develop a pan-African MIND fellowship to launch in 2025.

The institute will be inaugurated on Nov. 19, starting with a cohort of 34 research fellows selected in October. It aims to welcome academics from other African universities in 2025.

UNESCO is updating its 60-year old African history curriculum with new volumes that include African diasporas and their contributions to modern-day societies.

The General History of Africa (GHA) program was introduced in 1964 to help remedy the general ignorance of Africa’s history by reconstructing it and “freeing it from racial prejudices ensuing from slave trade and colonization,” while promoting an African perspective.

In its latest effort, the UN body is developing tools that African teachers and education policymakers can use to strengthen the teaching of the GHA program. The piloting workshop on mainstreaming African history was held in Ghana in September. The objective was to incorporate this history into national school education curricula.

“Teaching a common history to Africans is crucial in decolonizing the curriculum,” said Professor Paul Abiero, a historian at Moi University in Kenya. “But successful implementation will require financial resources, which are very limited in many countries.”
